Sarah Hicks is a place-based artist that uses a fluid wash of acrylic and watercolour to capture dreamscapes of the vast Canadian landscape. As an artist, her goal is to capture the breathtaking beauty of the natural world we live and recreate in in her paintings to share with others. Sarah believes that our connection to the environment is a vital part of our existence, and it is her hope that her work will inspire others to cherish and protect it.

AGOG is very pleased to welcome Sarah Hicks, “Home in Unexpected Places”, exhibiting at the Art Gallery of Golden from Friday, July 5 to Saturday, August 3, 2024.

“Home, in its essence, is twofold: a physical haven and an emotional refuge. In the wilderness, where nature dictates conditions and tests our resilience, makeshift camps and familiar landscapes offer both safety and solace. They provide respite from the challenges posed by the environment and our own physical and mental limits. Over time, these wild places begin to evoke a sense of belonging akin to home.” Hicks said about her upcoming exhibit.

Because of intimate experiences we have in nature, the places we set-up camp or continuously return to can often start to feel a little like a home away from home. A place where we can find a sense of safety, ease, and rest from the sometimes-difficult conditions, whether caused by nature itself or by pushing our physical and mental limits. Huts covered in snow, tents scattered on granite slabs, tin shelters cradled amongst rocky crags high above the glaciers below. We start to find home in unexpected places.

We will be hosting an opening reception on Friday, July 5th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Golden. Feel free to stop in and have a first look at the exhibit and hear some words from the artist!

Sarah will also be facilitating an Outdoor Watercolour Workshop on July 6th.The workshop includes a tour of her exhibit at AGOG before heading to the Pedestrian Bridge where painters will learn colour theory, composition and painting theory in plein air style. Register at www.sarahhicksart.ca.
