Cricket at KHMR?

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort transformed into a cricket pitch, well, at least a small patch of snow in front of the yurt near the Stairway to Heaven chairlift, on January 26th, Australia Day. Australians, Canadians, and many others found unity on the pitch and pitched a frozen tennis ball at ski poles used as wickets. Even though points were irrelevant, the game still brought a feeling of home for Aussies on the special day.

The unusual sight of a cricket game on a ski resort may have left some spectators scratching their heads. Still, for those involved, it was a moment that brought together different cultures and nationalities. As the frozen tennis ball flew through the air, laughter and cheers filled the snowy surroundings as players from Australia, Canada, and other countries joined forces to create a makeshift cricket pitch.

While points may not have mattered in this friendly game, the sense of camaraderie and belonging was more important than any score could ever be. For Australians celebrating their national holiday away from home, this impromptu match provided a touch of familiarity and a reminder of their roots.

As the game continued, ski poles were used as wickets, and snow served as the boundary lines. Despite the unfamiliar terrain and equipment, everyone played with enthusiasm and a sense of fun. It was a true testament to the power of sports to bring people together, regardless of their backgrounds or differences.

As the sun set on this snowy afternoon, friendships were formed, and memories were made on that makeshift cricket pitch. While most may not remember the final score, they will always recall the joy and camaraderie shared on that unique day in the mountains.

So next time you find yourself in a new place, don’t be afraid to embrace unfamiliar customs and traditions. You never know what unexpected joys and connections you may discover. After all, as proven by that unforgettable game of snow cricket, sometimes the best moments happen when you least expect it.
