Kicking Horse Country Chamber of Commerce (KHCCC) has just added an exciting addition to Kicking Horse Culture’s (KHC) Snow King weekend: a carnival-style street party, full of live music, games and a “snow-block sale” for local vendors.
The Snow King Snow-Block Street Party and Sale will take place from 3 to 6 pm on Saturday, February 19th, right before the Snow King MasqueParade celebration, which starts at 7 pm. The idea behind the event is to involve the business community in the MasqueParade celebrations while drawing people to the downtown core.
The chamber is excited to collaborate with KHC.
“We approached KHC and they were looking for a way to involve the business community with their weekend, so we’re very happy to be part of the events,” said Lori Baxendale, one of the main organizers for the event.
At 3 pm the downtown area, from the four way stop to 7-11, will be blocked off for pedestrian use only. Although many of the details are still being worked out, the chamber does know that there will be several fire pits throughout the downtown area, a charity barbecue, live music in front of Taps and the Rockwater, and a variety of games with the possibility of a snow ball toss and hockey shoot-out.
Most downtown merchants have agreed to stay open until 7:30 pm, many of which will bring merchandise and sale items to the sidewalk for the “snow-block sale”.
Baxendale emphasized that the street party and sale is not only for downtown merchants, any business or organization that wants exposure is welcome to participate. The goal is to have as much of the community involved and create a real, carnival-like atmosphere. “We’re excited to showcase what Golden has to offer on a weekend we know has a lot of out of town visitors,” said Ruth Kowalski, manager of the KHCCC, explaining that the event falls on Alberta family day weekend. “We want to show people what our town has to offer and let them experience Golden at its fullest.”
Baxendale added that this is why the street party starts at three, so both visitors and locals can spend the day in the outdoors and then be all bundled up and ready for the party afterwards.
“A lot of mountain towns have these winter festivals,” said Baxendale. “This is a taster of what we could build on in years to come.”
