Golden’s Little Mittens Animal Rescue calls for volunteers amid busy season

Little Mittens Animal Rescue in Golden is putting out an urgent call for volunteers as the organization enters one of its busiest times of year.

Wildlife rehabilitation, the group says, is often very different from what people expect. While there are rewarding moments such as watching an animal recover and return to the wild, the day-to-day reality involves long hours, constant cleaning, and physically demanding work. Volunteers and staff are often faced with emotionally difficult situations, as not every animal can be saved.

During the peak of baby season, the rescue operates around the clock, providing care 24 hours a day for vulnerable animals. With the increased workload, the need for additional support has become critical.

Little Mittens is seeking volunteers for a wide range of tasks, many of which do not involve direct animal handling. Help is needed with washing dishes, cleaning enclosures and facilities, assisting with transportation both within the community and across the province, and supporting building or maintenance projects. Opportunities are also available for those who are prepared to take on hands-on animal care.

Organizers emphasize that even a small time commitment can make a meaningful difference. Whether someone can offer an hour a week or bring specific skills, every contribution helps keep the operation running and supports the care of animals in need.

The rescue has deep roots in the community. Little Mittens Animal Rescue was founded in 2009 by Executive Director Alannah Knapp and a small group of dedicated volunteers. Initially operating out of their homes, the team worked to address the growing number of stray and feral cats in the area. By June 2011, the organization was officially recognized as a non-profit.

Today, that same spirit of dedication continues, but the demand for help has never been greater. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to reach out directly to their Facebook page or go to their website, littlemittens.org. For those unable to volunteer, simply sharing their message can also help connect them with much-needed support.

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

It’s not something you often see making its way through town — the trucks normally hard at work in the bush. But when the industry loses one of its own, the community makes the time.

A quiet but powerful display of just how significant the forestry industry is, and the kind of community we have here.
