Little Library: The newest addition to Nicholson

Little Library

Meet Matea Devcic and her Little Library Project. Matea and her family recently moved out to Nicholson from Golden. Their new neighbourhood seems to be a popular walking route for tourists, from the busy campground they live near, and locals, but it’s lacking in the literature department.

Matea and her mom, Heather, are avid readers and frequent the local Golden Library and would visit the little libraries located around Golden. When they made the move out to Nicholson, they no longer had easy access to the community libraries, so they thought it would be a great contribution to their new neighbourhood. Thus began their project – Matea’s Little Library.

If you are wondering what a little library is, it’s a little structure to hold books. Anyone can leave a book or take a book. It is a lending program based on the honour system. You’ll find them scattered around neighbourhoods for residents to peruse for reading material.

We asked Matea and her mom how the project went: “We sent in an application to the 2023 Resident Directed (ReDi) Grant Program and it was approved for our project. We were thrilled! My father hand-built the library box as a barn which seemed fitting in our small farming community. We have placed the library box at the entrance of our driveway so it is visible and easily accessible for everyone. The box is registered on the global non-profit organization littlefreelibrary.org and the very first to be mapped in Golden, BC.”

Be on the lookout for Matea’s Little Libary barn box on Ryter Road East in Nicholson and stop to browse the reading selection!

  • Flashback Friday 📰 Fall 2001!

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!
