The Road to Valour tour will make a stop in Golden on June 5, with a presentation hosted by the Rotary Club of Golden, and a short presentation at the Legion at 6:00 p.m.
The cross-country cycling journey is being led by veteran Garry McCracken, who set out from Vancouver on May 21, his 75th birthday, for a 2,700-kilometre, fully unsupported ride to Winnipeg. The tour is expected to take 42 days and includes roughly 14,000 metres of climbing across four provinces.
McCracken says the ride is built around three goals: supporting mental health programs for veterans, first responders and their families through Wounded Warriors Canada; sharing and preserving Canadian military history; and promoting healthy, active aging.
Golden will be one of the communities along the route as McCracken makes his way east. He is expected to give a presentation during his June 5 stop, offering local residents a chance to hear more about the ride, the history behind it, and the cause it supports.
McCracken has taken part in several previous Battlefield Bike Rides connected to Wounded Warriors Canada, raising approximately $50,000 through past efforts.
His latest ride continues that work while also honouring Canada’s military history and encouraging older adults to keep challenging themselves.
The Road to Valour began at the Seaforth Highlanders’ Armoury in Vancouver and is scheduled to finish on Canada Day at Valour Road in Winnipeg.
