As bears emerge from hibernation, Golden encourages diligence with garbage bins

As the spring season progresses and bears emerge from their winter hibernation, the Town of Golden is encouraging residents to be diligent in their use of bear-resistant bins.

Proper use of the bins will hopefully result in fewer human-bear conflicts as interactions with bears become more common if they are able to access food found in garbage bins.

Residents are reminded to keep their bins locked and only unlock them while using the bins and on the mornings of garbage pick-up days.

It is important that garbage bins are placed outside and prepared for pick up on their scheduled days in order to prevent excess garbage build-up which can quickly become attractants for bears.

The Town of Golden suggests that bins only be put out between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. on garbage pick-up day in order to limit the amount of time that the bins are outside unlocked but to also ensure they are picked up and not missed.

Once garbage has been collected, the bins should promptly be locked up and put away. If possible, bins should be stored in a secured enclosure such as a shed or garage.

Damaged bins or broken clips must be repaired or replaced in order to ensure their effectiveness. Those who are in need of replacement or repairs should contact ops@golden.ca with their address and information about what is needed.

Bins and clips that are damaged through regular wear and tear will be replaced for free. Bins that are deemed to be damaged by improper use of storage will not and the $165 replacement cost will be charged to the resident.

More information about garbage bins including usage rules and collection schedules can be found online at golden.ca/curbsidecollection.
