The Missing Dog Response Team in Golden was called into action on Monday, Oct. 9, after a report of two orphaned bear cubs in the area after it’s believed their mom was killed by a vehicle on the highway.

Residents were asked that if the animals were seen west of Golden before the truck scales, to contact Missing Dog Rescue.

A sign was set up along the highway warning of volunteers in the area and asking drivers to slow down. There is a concern the cubs could cross the highway and also be hit.

Trail cameras are set up in the area the bears are suspected to be in as well a drone was brought in to help with the search.

The Missing Dog Response Team is following the directions from Northern Lights Bear Rehab.

“I provided security so if the babies came back down I could keep them from getting hit,” said Maria Scales, with Missing Dog Response Team.

The response team is requesting that people do not to search for the bears and instead contact 250-939-9062 if they see the animals.

Scales is hoping to get a photo of the bears to sent to the rehab to determine the age of the cubs.

“There can be no humane scent in the area, I am just asking if people see they can call me,” said Scales.

As of the afternoon of Oct. 10, the cubs had not been found. For more information and to stay up to date on the situation go to Missing Dog Response Team on Facebook.

** Corrections have been made to this story since it was first published. Missing Dog Response Team is not capturing the bears but instead trying to get a photo of the cubs in order to send to Northern Lights Bear Rehab, not BC Conservation.
