Edison Motors Ltd, Canada’s first homegrown manufacturer of electric hybrid heavy-duty vocational trucks, today announced that Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) granted regulatory approval for the company to build its next-generation hybrid semi-trucks using the Cummins X15 engine as the on-board diesel generator powering its industry-leading diesel-electric drivetrain.
Engine approval marks a historic turning point for the British Columbia based clean technology company and for the Canadian commercial trucking industry as a whole.
“This is the moment we’ve been working toward since we built the first prototype in my parents’ backyard in Merritt,” said Chace Barber, President and Co-Founder of Edison Motors. “Itโs nice to see that Environment Canada is finally going to let us start selling our hybrid trucks.โ
The Cummins X15 is one of the most proven and trusted diesel engines in the commercial trucking industry. In Edison Motorsโ series-hybrid configuration, the X15 does not drive the wheels directly, it powers a generator that continuously recharges the truck’s high-voltage battery system, which in turn drives the electric axles. This unique architecture allows the engine to operate at a constant, optimized RPM regardless of vehicle speed or load, dramatically reducing fuel consumption and emissions compared to conventional diesel powertrains.
Edison’s hybrid trucks designed for heavy vocational trucking are projected to deliver substantial fuel savings with COโ reductions of up to 20 tonnes per truck annually.
The Cummins X15 brings the power, reliability, and serviceability that our customers in logging, oil and gas, and heavy vocational sectors demand,” said Eric Little, CEO and Co-Founder of Edison Motors. “Combined with our electric drive system, we can now build a certified road-legal Canadian truck that should outperform anything else on the market for heavy-duty applications.”ย
Following Transport Canada approval, Edison Motors plans to reach hybrid truck production at its 305-acre Golden, BC manufacturing facility, with first customer orders expected in Q4 2026. ย
