From bookstore loft to downtown hub: Bacchus Café starts new era

The Bacchus Café has been an institution in Golden since the early 2000s. Tucked into its cozy home above a bookstore, it has seen many phases of life over the years. As 2026 kicks off, so does a new era for the Bacchus Café. For the first time since opening, the café is moving to a new location in the Vibrant Village at 504 9th Ave.

Bacchus Café officially reopened on February 1 and is once again serving up some of the locals’ favourite coffees and café snacks. “We are so excited for this new space,” owner and head chef Katie Mitzel shared.

Despite the fresh location, there is still a familiar face behind the counter. Katie began running the café in recent years after retiring from 20 years of working in backcountry ski lodges. Her ability to craft hearty favourites is likely tied to a long history of feeding hungry skiers.

Katie also brought her team of baristas with her, a testament to the strong loyalty within the Bacchus crew — something more important than ever during this transition.

The new space may also mark the revival of old traditions. Mitzel mentioned plans to bring back poetry nights and open mic events in the new location.

“We want it to feel like people can just come in here and use the space,” Mitzel says — and space is no longer an issue. The new café features a large service area, with seating that extends into the wide hallway of the mini mall. The expanded footprint allows for many more tables, and according to Mitzel, the change couldn’t come soon enough. “We’d outgrown that space and the bookstore wanted to expand upstairs… So I was like, oh my god, how exciting to be part of a new building in downtown Golden.”

The Vibrant Village is planning a grand opening on February 14, and while official plans are still coming together, Mitzel shared the team’s excitement. “We just want to try and invite the community in to see the place. There will be somebody here to show people around and get an idea of what’s actually happening here.”

So, Golden — if you find yourself strolling downtown in need of serious caffeine, a bite to eat, or simply curious to see the new setup, pop into Bacchus and show some support. With a fresh location and the same familiar warmth, Bacchus Café is ready to continue serving as one of Golden’s beloved gathering places.
