$1 million in grants and scholarships available, thanks to the former Columbia Valley Credit Union, which is now Kootenay Savings

The former Columbia Valley Credit Union, which became Kootenay Savings Credit Union on January 1, has established a $1 million Credit Union Legacy Fund at the Golden & District Community Foundation, which will provide grants to non-profit organizations and scholarships to post-secondary students in Golden and Area A.

“For decades, credit unions have had a significant positive impact in Golden and the Columbia Valley,” said Glen Ewan, the former Board Chair of Columbia Valley Credit Union (CVCU), which is now Kootenay Savings (KSCU) after a merger of the two organizations earlier this year.

“The legacy of credit unions giving back to the community will continue under Kootenay Savings and their own community investment program, in addition to the Credit Union Legacy Fund, which will be thoughtfully managed by the Golden & District Community Foundation.”

Each year, a total of $50,000 in Credit Union Impact Grants will be available to local organizations, and up to $35,000 in scholarships annually (seven scholarships of $5,000) to support local students with their post-secondary education.

“This million-dollar gift by the former CVCU, now Kootenay Savings, will touch the lives of so many people here in Golden and the Columbia Valley,” shared Nola Milum, the Board Chair of the Golden & District Community Foundation, who is also now a Board Director at Kootenay Savings.

Milum was also a Board Director at the former CVCU. “The Golden & District Community Foundation has worked hard to ensure these grants and scholarships are immediately available to support our community.”

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!
