Edison Motors is the kind of company that prides itself on doing things differently. What sets them apart is their diesel-electric design for transport trucks. The trucks operate as fully electric vehicles equipped with onboard self-charging systems, an approach that reflects the outside-the-box thinking Edison Motors has become known for. The company’s EV (electric vehicle) Challenge captures that same innovative spirit by encouraging high school students across British Columbia and Alberta to put their creativity and engineering skills to the test.
Participating schools receive a selection of key components, including a driver’s seat and seat belts, brake and steering system parts, an electric motor, 48-volt batteries, a system controller, and a display. Students then use those materials to design and build their own small electric vehicle before bringing it to Golden to compete in a series of courses and challenges against other schools.
While Edison provides some of the materials and hosts the event, technical support is intentionally limited. The goal is to encourage students to conduct their own research, think independently, and develop original designs. According to Edison Motors, the challenge is intended to help students strengthen their engineering skills, critical thinking, creative problem-solving abilities, and teamwork.
Although creativity and fun are at the heart of the competition, safety remains a top priority for Edison Motors. Students must follow several safety guidelines to ensure each vehicle is as safe as possible. Requirements include crash helmets, eye protection, and coveralls for all participants, as well as functioning seat belts, working brakes, and properly insulated electrical systems on every vehicle.
The event will take place on Saturday, June 6, at 2815 Donald Road, the Edison Motors property in Donald. Adult day-entry tickets cost $10, while campsites on the property are available for $20 for those travelling from out of town. Tickets are available on the Edison Motors website, and it is encouraged to purchase tickets ahead of time.
While the day is sure to feature impressive builds and performance, high-energy competition, and memorable moments on the track, events like this are about more than just a day of epic go-karting. The EV Challenge is designed to inspire the next generation by getting high school students excited about electric vehicle technology and encouraging them to create something with their own hands.
Be sure to check out this unique event happening right here in our own backyard at the start of June.
