Golden Legion reopens lounge to public on Nov. 11

Golden Branch #122 of the Royal Canadian Legion has a long and distinguished history in Golden, British Columbia. It was officially incorporated on April 4, 1931, and received its Charter on May 28 of the same year, becoming the sixteenth branch established in the province.

The Branch is no stranger to adversity. Its original building on 14th Street South was destroyed by fire in 1949. Members rallied quickly and by 1951 had constructed a new facility. Tragedy struck again in 1966 when another fire devastated the building, yet once more, the membership rose to the challenge. By 1967, the branch had been rebuilt, and over time expanded to include a banquet room—further cementing its place as a social and community hub.

While the Legion was first formed to support returning veterans, its mission has grown significantly over the decades. Today, the Branch continues to assist Serving Military members, RCMP, Veterans, and their families, while also providing vital support to the wider community. It has proudly offered financial assistance to numerous local groups, with a focus on youth initiatives and non-profit organizations.

As Golden grew and more hospitality venues opened, the Branch faced increasing competition that affected revenue. Declining membership and the rising costs of maintaining an aging facility added further strain. In October 2021, the building was ultimately sold.

A new chapter began in April 2023 when the Branch entered into a lease agreement with the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD), taking over the lounge and kitchen facilities within the Golden and District Curling Club building. The Curling Club continues to operate on the main floor.

In early 2025, the Branch faced another significant challenge when a major water leak caused extensive damage to both the lounge and the Curling Club’s lower-floor space, forcing a temporary closure. Working closely with the CSRD and its restoration contractor, every effort was made to ensure the November 11 Remembrance Day Service would proceed without disruption.

Thanks to the dedication of the Branch Executive and a committed group of volunteers, restoration was completed on November 7, and the lounge has now reopened to the public. Some minor improvements are still underway, though these will not affect operations. The kitchen is expected to reopen in the spring, at which time the Branch looks forward to offering food service once again.

Through every challenge—fires, financial pressures, relocation, and unexpected setbacks—the resolve of Golden Branch #122’s members has remained steadfast. Their determination to serve Veterans and support the community stands as a powerful testament to the enduring spirit and purpose of the Royal Canadian Legion.
