Kicking Horse’s snow-filled comeback

As Kicking Horse Mountain Resort wraps up the 2025–2026 ski season, it is time to look back on the excellent snowfall and conditions experienced this year and appreciate what has been a remarkable turnaround.

The previous 2024–2025 season was a difficult one. The resort received only 274 cm of snowfall, far below its average of 477 cm. Conditions were further impacted when the Golden Eagle Express gondola was shut down following an incident in which a single hanger arm broke and a cabin detached from the lift. The gondola remained closed for the rest of the season, making it an especially challenging year for both the resort and its visitors.

In contrast, the 2025–2026 season began with historic momentum. December brought a record-breaking 340 cm (11 ft) of snow, making it the snowiest December in the resort’s history and surpassing the previous record set in 2017. The early snowfall set the tone for the season, prompting General Manager Richard Oszust to describe it as “not just a great start, but a historic one.”

That momentum carried into January, with total snowfall reaching 540 cm within the first few weeks. While snowfall eased slightly later in the month, the early accumulation had already built a deep and reliable base, setting the mountain up for consistently strong conditions.

February did not bring the same large snowfall totals seen earlier in the season, but steady, smaller snowfalls helped maintain fresh conditions across the mountain. These regular top-ups ensured that skiing remained enjoyable, even without major storm cycles.

In early March, the resort experienced another boost, with 13 cm of snow falling on March 8, followed by 21 cm over a 48-hour period between March 10 and 12. By mid-March, the snowpack at the base remained an impressive 238 cm, a testament to the strength of the early season. Although no major storms followed, consistent light snowfall continued through the remainder of the month, keeping conditions fresh and reliable.

Overall, the 2025–2026 season stands out as a strong return to form for Kicking Horse. After a challenging year prior, the resort delivered exceptional early snowfall, a solid base, and dependable conditions throughout the winter, making it a season defined by both recovery and remarkable snow.
