It’s back-to-back success for the Nicholson Fire Department in Electoral Area A, as they earned the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s Fire Department of the Year honours for the second year in a row.
The efforts of the Nicholson Fire Department were acknowledged at the May 21, 2026, Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) Regular Board Meeting with the presentation of the award.
Over the past year, Nicholson has demonstrated leadership well beyond the boundaries of its own fire hall. They have played a key role in supporting the development of the new Kicking Horse Fire Department, offering guidance, mentorship, and operational support to the CSRD’s newest fire department.
“Their willingness to step up and help build capacity in a neighbouring community reflects the very best of what fire service cooperation should look like,” says Regional Fire Chief Sean Coubrough.
“Nicholson has also made significant strides in strengthening relationships with the Golden Fire Department and other neighbouring partners. Improved communication, collaboration, and mutual support have created a stronger, more resilient regional fire network that benefits all residents.”
The work put in by the Nicholson Department also has wider benefits to the community.
Nicholson successfully achieved its Superior Tanker Shuttle Service (STSS) certification.
This is a major accomplishment that will directly benefit the people they serve by helping reduce insurance premiums for property owners within their response area.
The award also acknowledges the department’s commitment to instruction, with members serving on the Regional Fire Instructor Team, as well as actively supporting the FireSmart program.
