Registering for Kindergarten in Rocky Mountain School District

Rocky Mountain School District by Rocky Mountain School District
January 8, 2026
in Local News

Do you have a child who will be five years old on or before December 31, 2026?

If so, you are probably thinking about going to kindergarten, and chances are you have questions, including when and how do I register for school.

Starting this year, and every year moving forward, kindergarten registration will happen in the Rocky Mountain School District from January 1-31. You may think that it is early, but there are many reasons why registering in January is important.

Registering in January is not just a formality; it plays a vital role in allowing schools and the school district to plan effectively. Every February, the Ministry of Education and Child Care asks school districts how many students they are expecting in all their schools for the following year, including the number of kindergarten students. Having an informed number of students allows schools to:

• Hire the right number of staff

• Allocate resources as needed

• Organize classrooms and learning spaces efficiently

When families register in January, schools are better prepared to welcome all children in September!

Registering is simple and can be done at home — or wherever you are!

1. Go to www.sd6.bc.ca

2. Click on the Student Registration page

3. Follow the links to the Parent Guide and Registration Portal

You will need the following documents to complete your registration:

• Your child’s birth certificate

• Your child’s BC Care Card (or proof of application if you’re new to B.C.)

• Proof of B.C. residency (such as a utility bill, driver’s license, or rental/purchase agreement)

You can register on a smartphone, tablet, or computer. If you need assistance or don’t have access to a device, you can contact your catchment school for support and plan to go in and use a school laptop to register.

A child’s catchment school is determined by their address, and you can find the list of catchment schools on the student registration page.

Families can learn about kindergarten programs, gradual entry, early learning events, and ways to support children leading up to kindergarten by visiting the school district’s Early Learning page at www.sd6.bc.ca/early-learning.
