School Bus: Drive a big yellow bus, be a big local hero

Rocky Mountain School District by Rocky Mountain School District

in Local News

Golden’s schools are once again facing that mysterious force that seems to strike every year—no, not a great plague of mosquitoes—a bus driver shortage! Rocky Mountain School District No. 6 is officially on the hunt for casual school bus drivers in the Golden area, and the job posting will stay open until enough brave souls answer the call.

And honestly? It’s a pretty solid gig.

The job pays $29.24 an hour, comes with predictable hours, and mostly involves getting kids to and from school safely without losing your zen. You may also get called on for field trips and extracurricular adventures.

Applicants must have a valid Class 2 BC license, at least five years of driving experience, and the ability to pass an annual medical (to prove you still know left from right before dawn). The job is listed as casual but could become permanent for the right candidate.

Without enough drivers, things get chaotic fast. Routes get shuffled, ride times stretch, and families are suddenly performing logistical gymnastics before their morning coffee. In a town the size of Golden, even one missing driver can set off a chain of events worthy of an action movie.

But here’s the good news, school bus driving is surprisingly perfect for a lot of people. Retirees, parents with daytime availability, or anyone easing into semi-retirement often find the schedule ideal. You get predictable hours, a steady routine, and the warm fuzzy feeling of being a crucial part of a kid’s day. Plus, the bus is bright yellow, so you’re basically driving sunshine!

Community Call-Out:

Maybe this isn’t your next adventure—but it might be perfect for someone you know. A neighbour? A friend? That person who has opinions about everyone else’s driving? Pass the word along! Sometimes the right candidate just needs a nudge (or a gentle shove).

Anyone interested can apply through the Rocky Mountain School District careers page, or they can phone Operations Supervisor Russell Wagner at (250) 344-8643 for the inside scoop!
