30 under 30: Golden had plenty to celebrate this past weekend as three of its young leaders were recognized at the 30 Under 30 Awards in Kimberley. Sponsored by Columbia Basin Trust and JCI, the awards highlighted 30 outstanding youth from across the Columbia Basin region, which is home to more than 175,000 residents. For a community the size of Golden to have three recipients among this group is a remarkable achievement.
Sebastian Gylander was honoured for his accomplishments in cross-country skiing, where he has competed and excelled on the world stage. Earlier this year, he earned two gold medals and a silver at the World Winter Games in Italy. His dedication to sport, positive attitude, and leadership have made him a role model for other young athletes in Golden.
Dan Geddes, president of the Golden Chamber of Commerce and owner of the Dirtbag Climbing Gym, was recognized for his leadership as both a guide and entrepreneur. He has helped mentor youth in climbing and community building, encouraging independence, self-sufficiency, and a spirit of collaboration.
Tyler Kamstra, Golden’s third awardee, was celebrated for his commitment to personal growth and community involvement. Through the Special Olympics program, he qualified for Nationals in cross-country skiing, and he has taken on leadership roles in the community, including serving as president of Golden Rotary. He is also active in music and volunteer initiatives.
The awards ceremony carried a strong message for young people across the Basin: there has never been a better time to step up, connect with leaders, and make change happen. Golden’s three recipients are proof of what dedication, resilience, and community spirit can achieve.
Congratulations to Sebastian, Dan, and Tyler for making Golden proud and inspiring the next generation of leaders.
The 30 Under 30 campaign, run by JCI Kootenay in partnership with Columbia Basin Trust, is designed to spotlight young changemakers across the Columbia Basin. It seeks to honour people 30 years old or younger who are making a difference in their communities—whether through volunteer work, entrepreneurship, creative innovation or leadership. Recipients receive public recognition, professional profile features, and invitations to formal recognition events in September.
