Girls’ basketball is alive and well in Golden. On Feb. 21st, the Bantam team, consisting of twelve grade 7 and 8s from Lady Grey, Nicholson and Golden Secondary Schools, played their first official game. The team traveled to Kimberley to participate in Zones.
The Bantam team was defeated in the first game by Selkirk Secondary, a strong team that went on to play in the championship game. Highlights from the second game include our top scorers: Addie Johnston with 6 points, Bailey Blain also scoring 6 points, and Stella Kells contributing 4 points.
Kamber Johnson and Kinsley Mackenzie had a basket each adding 4 points. Sanara Austin and Caeli White showed true sportsmanship with quickness and hustle, Brianna Brown and Parker Jackson supported the team with ball handling and great attitudes. Brooke Dawson excelled in her defensive play, Jayde Fennings played with heart, and Vanessa Jones ran lanes and rebounded.
The final score was the Golden Eagles 20 and the Laurie Tigers 36. A special mention also goes to Alisa Johnston, junior assistant coach for her assistance on the bench.
The players have showed dedication and put in a lot of hard work. Practice continues until Spring Break and we look forward to next season. Great job team!
