Golden Rockets new season, back to the community

On behalf of the Golden Junior Hockey Society, I am pleased to welcome you to another exciting season of Rockets Hockey.

As we celebrate our 35th year, we’re reminded that junior hockey in Golden has always been more than what happens on the ice – it’s about community, connection, and supporting one another.

Looking back over the past season, we’re proud not only of what we achieved as a team, but of how we were able to give back.

Our players contributed over 120 hours in the community, from helping at youth programs and town events to supporting fundraisers and participating in the Christmas Parade.

We visited CBAL Settlement Services in their classroom and then introduced them to the joys of a live hockey game, and we worked closely with community organizations to lend a hand wherever it was needed. These experiences strengthen our players as individuals while also keeping the Rockets connected to the community that supports us.

We thank all those organizations that provided our players with an opportunity to give back.

This season, we’re building on that effort with the continued leadership of Kim Weatherall, now in her second year as our Community Liaison Director.

Kim has been instrumental in coordinating opportunities for our players to support local organizations, and she remains the primary point of contact.

If you have a project, event, classroom visit, retirement-home activity, or even practical help (set-ups, moves, unloading, greeting, reading with kids), we’d love to hear from you. Please reach out at community@goldenrockets.com.

Jed Houseman remains in place as our Head Coach / General Manager and leads an expanded off-ice program designed to grow great people as well as great players.

This includes academic and career guidance, practical skills training, volunteer placements with local partners, and individual goal-setting – we want our athletes to leave the Rockets ready for college, trades, and leadership roles in Golden and beyond.

If you’d like to assist with this in any way, please contact Jed at jhouseman@goldenrockets.com.

The Golden Rockets are striving to be more than a hockey team – we are committed to being part of the fabric of Golden. We look forward to building even stronger community connections in the season ahead.

Lucille Hayward, President

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!
