Schach Therapy is back, and we’re excited about the new additions this year.
The Golden Cycling Club and Golden Family Center teamed up last year to engage our community in celebrating resilience in the face of adversity during a team relay event on Mount 7.
Teams of 2, 3, or 4 climbed the Schacher Trail and descended Mount 7, with proceeds from the event going to local mental health services provided by the Golden Family Center. An evening event followed at Confluence Climbing, featuring keynote speaker Justin Telfer.
A film by Lara Shea and Elora Braden concluded the evening with her moving edit of the day’s events. The event was a success, raising $2,000.
If you haven’t been up the Schacher, it’s a trail that winds through the majestic forest on Mount 7, connecting you to the launch and all the other descending trails on the mountain. It also offers a chance to clear your mind, sort through life’s challenges, get some exercise either solo or with friends, and have a bit of fun.
It’s a single-track trail completed in 2018, inspired by Sean Schacher, a local family man, and brought to life through the efforts of Jeremy Harris, another local family man and good guy with superhero powers. Both Sean and Jeremy now ride along in spirit with you on this trail.
This year, e-bikes and trail runners are welcome on teams, or you can tackle it all solo! Schach Therapy is a community event, and our community is here to support everyone.
If the relay’s not your thing but you still want to be involved and support, come join us for a BBQ at Reflection Lake hosted by the Golden Rotary Club. Food tickets are available for purchase, with donations going to the Golden Family Center.
To wrap up the day, there will be a social at Whitetooth Brewery and a community art-based initiative showcasing your expression of resilience. All ages are welcome.
We believe this comes in many forms, and we would love to see what it means to YOU! Whether through visual art, spoken word, poetry, or a creative piece, your expression has the power to inspire and connect.
• THEME: What does resilience mean to you?
• SUBMISSION: Drop off at the Golden Family Centre before June 18th or bring it to the social. All voices and ages are welcome.
As part of the event, the Golden Family Center is offering two creative workshops with Art Therapist Janis Dyck to help you get your creative juices flowing.
The workshops will include a guided meditation, as well as a writing and visual art process. Participants will have the opportunity to create a piece to share at the Schach Therapy evening event. No experience is necessary!
• Workshops: Thursday, June 12 from 10 am to 12 pm at Element Therapeutics,
• Tuesday, June 17, 4:30 pm to 6 pm at the Golden Family Centre.
The Golden Family Center offers accessible, community-based counselling and support services for individuals, families, children, and youth across Golden and Area A.
Guided by the philosophy “meet you where you are at,” the Center provides no-cost programs, including mental health support, parenting help, youth and infant development, and substance use counselling.
With flexible access and inclusive, trauma-informed care, the Center meets people with compassion and respect, wherever they are in their journey.
Together, we’ll create a space that reflects the courage, creativity and heart of Golden.
