The Golden women’s soccer team travelled to Cranbrook over the weekend for the Adult 7v7 New Dawn Cup. The ladies played in four games over the weekend and managed to bring home bronze for their efforts. Quite an achievement for a team playing in their first tournament together. Nienke Rientjes and Dorothée Sévigny led the team in scoring through the four games.
The players had originally come together through a casual drop-in soccer in spring 2024, which started meeting once a week. The momentum has been building from there, with anywhere from complete beginners to very experienced players attending from week to week.
The team has also been extremely grateful for the assistance from the Neighbourhood Small Grants program. Funding through that program has allowed the team to purchase equipment as well as brand new team jerseys, which were on display for the first time over the weekend.
The team will be taking the rest of the winter off but will be back in full force in the spring, and new players are always welcome.
