Tell us a little about yourself and your connection to Golden: I moved to Golden for a job offered by a friend, Bruce Fairley who I climbed and hiked with down on the coast. I thought that I would try the job and town out for a year or so. Within a year, I was sure Golden was where I wanted to be my home. I met great people, some of whom became very good friends. I skied the community hill and helped clear runs in the fall to get a discount on my skiing.
I have volunteered at the Food Bank unloading trucks, etc., as well as hiking, of course, helping out at the Kicking Horse Culture shows; even acting in plays and being a part of Broadway singing and dancing reviews. Lots of fun, but once they heard my singing, they said I should be the person introducing the numbers. Still lots of fun. And about 8 years ago I ran for councillor and was elected. So many things that would not have happened if I was still in Vancouver.
My friends and family down in the Lower Mainland remain important to me, but Golden will always be my home.
Why have you decided to run for Golden Town Council? I am running for re-election as a councillor because, with 8 years’ experience as a councillor, I believe I can make a good contribution to council and to the Town of Golden. I find it rewarding as well as sometimes frustrating to be a member of council. We will be having a majority of new councillors, so I think my experience can be of particular value.
I know how local governments function and some of the possible things to consider. I think it is quite important to have a strong council for the future of Golden, and that strong council needs a diversity of experiences and opinions. Strong Opinions are fine but need to be tied to an open mind. We need to deal with each other civilly and with respect.
I believe that, with my experience, I can make a good contribution to the new council, and that is something I want to contribute to. It is satisfying to contribute to our community.
