On Wednesday, June 18, the Golden Women’s Resource Centre is hosting their annual Clothesline Project and Fundraising BBQ.
The event will take place at the Spirit Square during the weekly Farmers’ Market.
The Rotary Club of Golden will be grilling up hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers from 11:00 am – 2:00 pm with all proceeds supporting anti-violence, community support work.
The Clothesline Project first started in 1990 in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where a coalition of women’s groups came together to raise awareness of violence against women.
They wanted to raise awareness that the number of women who had been killed as a result of intimate partner violence was similar to the number of lives that had been lost during the Vietnam War.
This community art project invites women and survivors of gender-based violence to share messages of rage, resistance and hope through the painting of a t-shirt.
Every year, shirts are added to the collection and put on display during this event. The shirts will be displayed as a striking visual art piece along the River Walk and in Spirit Square.
Anyone wanting to design a shirt is welcome to stop by the GWRC during regular hours of operation. All supplies are provided.
