Golden Curling Club: Curlers in Golden won’t have to hang up their brooms next season after the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) Board voted to support the purchase of a new ice chiller to replace the broken unit.
The replacement unit will be funded with $100,000 from the Electoral Area A Community Works Fund, as well as a $51,000 contribution from the Golden Curling Rink capital reserve.
A replacement was recommended to the board rather than a repair, as the unit is already 16 years old and the lifespan of most ice chillers is 15-20 years. Replacement was also recommended, as it will also avoid any further breakdowns or costly repairs.
To ensure the upcoming winter curling season was not disrupted, the Board agreed to move forward with the emergency ice chiller replacement.
In BC, Community Works Funds (formerly known as Gas Tax Funds) are a dedicated funding source for local governments to invest in infrastructure and community-building projects. Local governments can choose which eligible projects to fund, with a focus on creating a clean environment, fostering economic growth, and strengthening communities.
Improvements to the CSRD-owned Golden Curling Rink are eligible for use of Community Works Funds.
It is planned for the chiller replacement to take place before the Fall 2025 curling season.
The Golden Curling Club recently celebrated their 130th anniversary.
