Town Council heard from Sinova Global on September 16, as the company offered a brief courtesy update on their quartz mining operations south of Golden.ย

The presentation, led by Vice President of Resource Operations Chad Slee, outlined the companyโ€™s vision, current activity, and next steps for the Horse Creek quarry, now branded as Sinova Quartz.

Aiming to Supply the Clean Energy Economy

Founded in 2012 and headquartered in Edmonton, Sinova Global is positioning itself as a critical player in the clean energy transition.

Their focus is on high-purity silicon metal, an element with no commercial substitute and growing global demand. Silicon metal is used in everything from electronics and semiconductors to solar panels, vehicle batteries, and lightweight car parts.

The Horse Creek deposit, located about 12 kilometres southeast of Golden and four kilometres from Highway 95 and the CPKC rail line, is described by the company as one of the worldโ€™s purest and rarest silica quartz sites.ย

The quartz measures over 99.6 percent purity, meaning less processing is required compared to other deposits. With extraction permits approved in 2021, the site has the potential to produce 1.4 million tonnes annually, with reserves that could last more than 60 years. That said, the company, at this time, plans to extract up to 300,000 tonnes per year.

Local Employment and Infrastructure

Sinovaโ€™s Golden operation will ultimately employ about 20 local operators, service staff, and safety support. The company has drawn on established local contractors for site work as far as possible, and hopes to continue to be able to employ local people.

Additionally, as part of its efforts to integrate into the community, Sinova has invested in road upgrades around the quarry site and says it is building relationships with stakeholders through safety and well-being initiatives.

Commitment to Sustainability

A recurring theme in the presentation was sustainability.

The company says its environmental management plans meet or exceed provincial requirements, addressing issues such as air and water quality, noise, and reclamation. Nearby residents are notified 48 hours before any blasting, with clear information on timing, duration, and safety signals.

The company confirms that because of the exceptional purity of the quartz, its operations can remain low-impact and avoid the use of harmful chemicals often associated with mining.

Looking Ahead

Sinova has only recently begun extraction at Horse Creek. After its first month of mining, the company has launched a quality assurance program to verify product standards. At the same time, they are working to complete financing for a downstream processing plant in Tennessee, which would allow the company to expand operations at scale.

Officials framed the project not only as an economic opportunity for Golden but also as a chance to showcase sustainable mining practices in the Canadian Rockies.

In their words, the deposit is a โ€œworld-class resourceโ€ that could anchor an end-to-end supply chain for solar panels and other clean-energy applications.

Local Impact Still Developing

While Sinova Global painted a positive picture of progress, the long-term impacts for Golden are still taking shape.ย

The project promises jobs, infrastructure upgrades, and a role in the growing clean energy economy, but it also raises questions about how industrial activity aligns with the regionโ€™s environmental values and tourism identity.
