It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Martina Sterbenc, who left us peacefully on September 24, 2025, just one day shy of her 94th birthday.
Martina was born in Metlika, Slovenia, on September 25, 1931. In 1958, she immigrated to Canada with her beloved husband Peter, where they built a life filled with hard work, love, and family in Golden, BC. Together, they raised two children, Peter and Liana, and embraced the opportunities and challenges of a new land with courage and resilience.
Tragically, Martina lost her son Peter in 1985 – a heartbreak she carried with grace. Now, they are reunited, and we find comfort in knowing she is with him again.
In 1996, after Peter’s retirement, Martina and her husband began a new and fulfilling chapter in Kelowna, where they enjoyed their golden years surrounded by nature and the laughter of their grandchildren, Ashley and Ethan, who were the light of her life.
Martina will be remembered for her sharp mind, warm humour, and kind heart. She had a remarkable gift for cooking, and her home was always filled with the aroma of delicious meals and the beauty of blooming flowers – her garden a reflection of her nurturing spirit.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, Peter; her daughter, Liana; her son-in-law, Don; her grandchildren, Ashley and Ethan; and all those whose lives she touched.
Family and friends will each honour Martina in their own ways. No formal service will be held.
