Help your child fight the “summer slide” during July and August with the help of the library.
The summer slide refers to a noted decline in literacy and other academic skills that children experience during the summer vacation. One of the best ways to keep reading skills strong is to encourage children to read for pleasure.
Have an open mind about the books your children choose, the best book is the one they want to read. And don’t forget to let them see you enjoy reading!
Studies have shown that it is one of the best ways to foster lifelong literacy skills.
If your child is in kindergarten to Grade 7, consider registering them for the Summer Reading Club. In addition to fun and enriching weekly activities at the library, children are given a reading record to take home which can be returned at the end of the summer to win a prize.
In addition to a wide variety of children’s books, from board books for babies, to novels for tweens and teens, we also have STEAM toys available to play with in the branch and some great toys and equipment available to borrow through our Library of Things catalogue.
For more information, or to register your child for the Summer Reading Club, please contact me at llarose@orl.bc.ca or call the branch at 250-344-6516. The Golden public library is located at 819 Park Dr..
