Opinion: If it can happen there, it can happen here!

Duane Crandall opinion piece

So here we are, the little Canada, with roughly only the population of one state, California, sleeping beside one of the most powerful nations in the world, wondering if what is happening there could ever happen here. You have heard that โ€˜if America sneezes, the world catches a cold!โ€™

Well, if itโ€™s true, we know who will likely have the cold. Of course, Canada. Well within sneezing distance!

So with the first round of the Trump court cases now over it might be time to try to figure out whether or not we have anything to worry about.

Many of us have grown up with the idea that since we live in the โ€˜free worldโ€™ with well-rooted democratic institutions and protections like Diefenbakerโ€™s Bill of Rights and Trudeau the Firstโ€™s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, that we are well protected from governments.

Thatโ€™s what lots of Americans thought with their Constitution.

They should now know better.

There are lots of good things in those documents, but what seems to not be there is who is responsible for the enforcement of those idyllic rights. It seems that nobody is. Certainly nobody in the State of New York. And if there were any enforcement, it would clearly be selective.

Itโ€™s interesting that the Trump case is being so closely followed by the Hunter Biden case. And while any selection of human rights clearly worked against Trump, it will be interesting to watch how clearly it works in favour of Hunter Biden.

Hunter is being charged with lying, in the purchase of a gun or guns, in the State of Delaware, which in this era is really the State of Biden. So with all kinds of government appeasement and media support, there is not one chance in a million worlds that Hunter will spend five minutes even on the porch of a jail in which he belongs.

We need governments. But we need good governments, who really do care about the people within their borders and on whose behalf they exist. And we should be able to fully expect that in these parts of the free world.

Itโ€™s been interesting to watch the Democratic Party in the U.S. fall all over themselves in their absolute and total fear of Donald Trump. And they arenโ€™t afraid of his stupid and rude verbal antics. They are afraid of his policies of achieving things such as energy independence, border security and a healthy economy.

And on border security, for example, while every president since Jimmy Carter has worked to slowly increase border security, only Joe Biden has let fifteen million people breach the border, and he did it on purpose!

The Dems remind me of a bowling pin that has been hit by a ball, and as it wobbles around wondering whether or not to fall down, it accidentally finds some footing. Enough footing to find another way of going after Trump and making themselves look foolish. They brought all those court cases, digging up ideas from years ago and what happened to Trumps popularity, it went up.

Now with this conviction in their kangaroo court, it has climbed even further.

But the question for Canadians is whether or not the nonsense that is going on down south could happen here. I wish we could know that it could not, but Iโ€™m not sure at all that thatโ€™s the case. All a government has to do to take us down the same road is, not to abolish our legal protections, but to โ€˜suspendโ€™ them. That sounds innocent enough doesnโ€™t it!

If you might have looked at this space over the last few weeks you have read about what happened to the Japanese Canadians along the B.C. coast during WWII. You know whose idea that was do you? Not Canadaโ€™s. Not the British. Of course, it was the Americans.

If we want to know what is going to happen in Canada in the future we only need to look at the U.S. Itโ€™s just the way it is. And Iโ€™m not anti-American. I went to college there for four years. I have cousins all over Washington State, one of whom is in the process of obtaining Canadian citizenship.

So you might not be interested in Trump or Hunter Biden. But we should be interested in the power that is behind the actions against them. One with government favour, another without.

And if it can happen there, it can happen here.
