Big mosquito will soon be landing at Bacchus Books and Cafe

This pesky sculpture has been turning heads all over town when it flies by atop its creator’s van.

Cory Schacher has been making a name for himself around town as a premier wood sculptor, having created pieces for community events, including the Golden Ultra race last summer and the Provincial Bantam Hockey Tournament last month.

One of his latest creations, a gigantic mosquito, has been living affixed to the top of Schacher’s van.

The bug has found a new home, however, and will soon be part of Bacchus Books in downtown Golden.

“I’ve been doing small craft market stuff for a long time now, and I’ve done small mosquitoes, about four inches long. They’re really popular,” said Shacher.

Mosquitoes may seem like an odd choice as inspiration for artwork, but Schacher has a simple explanation.

“I just like bugging people.”

He even snuck one into a yurt he made for a friend, and enjoyed hearing his shock when he noticed it.

Bacchus Books will not be the only place you can see his woodwork on display. The Town of Golden purchased a piece of his that was auctioned off as part of a fundraiser during last year’s Golden Ultra running event. This year, they will decide where it will be put on public display.
