GOLDEN, B.C. – Sixteen-year-old Golden snowboarder Devun Perry is preparing to represent Canada at the FIS Freeride Junior World Championships in Kappl, Austria.

Perry has established himself as one of Canada’s leading junior freeride snowboarders through years of training, competition and commitment to the sport. His selection for the international championship marks an important milestone for the young athlete and an opportunity to compete against some of the world’s best junior freeriders.

Beyond his competitive achievements, Perry has also become a positive role model for younger athletes in Golden. He has helped coach children’s camps through Sideway Strategies, sharing his experience and encouraging young riders as they develop their own skills and confidence.

His journey has included significant challenges. Perry previously fractured several vertebrae, from T4 through T8, as well as his sternum. The injuries required major back surgery, followed by an extensive recovery. He eventually returned to snowboarding and competition, determined to continue pursuing the sport.

“Devun has worked incredibly hard for this opportunity, but we are equally proud of the person he has become,” said fundraiser organizer Loretta Perry. “He is humble, determined and always willing to encourage younger athletes. Coming back from such a serious injury showed just how much strength and perseverance he has.”

Travelling from Golden to Austria represents a considerable financial commitment for the Perry family, in addition to the costs of Devun’s regular training and regional competitions. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover travel and competition expenses.

The opportunity comes at an exciting time for the sport. Freeride skiing and snowboarding have been approved for inclusion in the 2030 Olympic Winter Games in the French Alps, creating a new international pathway for emerging athletes such as Perry.

Community members who would like to support Devun’s journey can donate through the “From Golden to the World Stage: Devun’s Journey” campaign at GoFundMe.com. Those unable to donate are encouraged to share the campaign and follow his progress as he prepares to represent Golden and Canada on the world stage.

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!

It’s not something you often see making its way through town — the trucks normally hard at work in the bush. But when the industry loses one of its own, the community makes the time.

A quiet but powerful display of just how significant the forestry industry is, and the kind of community we have here.
