EmberFest ignites creativity among youth

EmberFest, Golden, B.C.’s annual Festival of Light celebration, being held on February 15, symbolizes the power of transformation and the potential for new growth, new light, and new perspectives.

Known formerly as “The Snow King Festival and MasqueParade,” the new name, EmberFest, is igniting curiosity among community members; while the spirit of the festival continues to inspire community collaboration, connection, and creative expression. Just as embers have the potential to spark a blazing fire, “Emberfest” is igniting the passions and dreams of young people, encouraging them to embrace new experiences and innovate creatively around this year’s theme of “rejuvenation.”

As displayed in the art piece pictured here, it was created by Golden Secondary Students (GSS), (from left) Lila Richard, age 17, Hannah Briffett, age 16, and Arwed Phle, age 16. The sculpture will be displayed in the foyer at (GSS).

Richard says the art they are creating, in celebration of the festival is “related to rejuvenation.”

“I love the theme of new growth. As teenagers, it is important for us to try new things to gain experience and new perspectives that will help us grow into adults. It helps us build our knowledge,” she says.

The Maker Space at the Golden Youth Centre has been busy with after-school art parties being held in partnership with Kicking Horse Culture. Costumes are being created and excitement growing as the event nears.

The GSS Poi Lab students have been preparing for their part in the show as well. These students have been building flow arts skills in Poi and will showcase their talents with the A-Muse Troupe during the event. These students participated in a special workshop, funded by the Columbia Basin Trust, in November 2024, with World Renowned Master Poi Artist Nick Woolsey and Master Poi Artist Kay Spinner and practiced weekly with local Master Poi Artists from Golden, B.C.

Additionally, Lady Grey Secondary School’s Cirque Kids have been working with Circus Artists and Clowns John Denham and Jocelyn Wilson of the A-Muse Troupe and will wildly grace the stage during the pageant at EmberFest.

  • Flashback Friday 📰 Fall 2001!

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!

It’s not something you often see making its way through town — the trucks normally hard at work in the bush. But when the industry loses one of its own, the community makes the time.

A quiet but powerful display of just how significant the forestry industry is, and the kind of community we have here.
