A unique summer program is starting in Golden this week that will encourage creativity in youth while producing a functional art piece. Kicking Horse Culture is partnering with local artist Chris Pecora to put on a Youth Mural Camp.
Led by Columbia Valley graphic designer and mural artist Chris Pecora, the four-day camp will guide participants through every stage of creating a mural, from developing a concept to painting the finished piece. Along the way, youth will learn about mural-making techniques, visual storytelling, and the collaborative process behind creating large-scale public art.
Pecora has worked on more than 20 murals over the past decade and is known for his bold, colourful designs. He believes public art has the power to transform shared spaces while bringing communities together. The completed mural will be installed beside the Golden Library, creating a permanent piece of public art for the community to enjoy.
More than just an opportunity for teens to develop their artistic skills, the program gives participants a chance to be part of something bigger than themselves. The mural they create will become a lasting part of Golden, displayed in the heart of the community they call home, allowing them to look back on their work with pride for years to come.
The camp will take place on Mondays, July 13, 20 and 27, as well as August 10, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Golden Civic Centre. No previous art experience is required, and the program is open to youth between the ages of 12 and 18. Spots are still available if youth in the community want to drop in and participate! The program is supported by the Golden & District Community Foundation.
