Sober Riders bring the community together

This weekend, the Golden Men’s Group partnered with the Sober Rider Motorcycle Association to host a clean and sober motorcycle event and community barbecue at Alexander Drive Park.

The free event welcomed riders, families, and community members for an afternoon of live music, barbecue, games, and, of course, motorcycles. Beyond bringing people together, the gathering aimed to promote safe riding practices and demonstrate that motorcycling and a healthy, sober lifestyle can go hand in hand.

The Golden Men’s Group began in 2021 as a volunteer initiative before becoming a registered society in December 2024. Its mission is to “create a thriving, stigma-free community where men feel empowered to openly discuss their mental health, support each other, and grow in resilience, emotional wellness, and personal fulfillment.”

In small communities like Golden, access to mental health services can be limited. Community-led initiatives such as the Golden Men’s Group help bridge that gap by creating spaces where people can connect, support one another, and access peer support without many of the barriers associated with formal services.

The Sober Rider Motorcycle Association shares many of those values. Through rides and community events, the organization promotes sobriety, fellowship, and responsible riding while encouraging riders to serve as positive role models for younger generations. For decades, motorcycle culture has often been portrayed in popular media through stereotypes involving crime, substance use, and rebellion.

While those stereotypes have never reflected the entire riding community, many modern riding groups are actively working to challenge them by promoting safety, service, and healthy lifestyles.

Walking through the event, it was impossible to miss the excitement on the faces of young children as motorcycles rode around the park. Riders took turns passing through a small set of pylons while families gathered to watch. Between the bikes, music, food, and conversation, the afternoon had a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.

While the event was lighthearted and fun, it also carried a quiet but important message. For many young people, seeing adults come together to support one another, make healthy choices, and give back to their community can leave a lasting impression. Sometimes being present, setting a positive example while having a bit of fun, can leave a lasting impression.
