Volunteer fair aims to connect residents with local organizations

As volunteer numbers continue to decline, many Golden-area organizations are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain programs, organize events and fill essential roles.

A Community Volunteer Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 23 will give residents an opportunity to learn how they can help.

The free, drop-in event will run from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Golden Seniors Centre. Local organizations will be on hand to share information about their work and the volunteer opportunities currently available.

The fair offers a low-pressure way for residents to explore different possibilities, whether they are interested in helping regularly, assisting with occasional events or contributing a particular skill.

Volunteers play a crucial role in nearly every part of community life in Golden, from recreation, arts and culture to social services, fundraising and community events. As longtime volunteers step back and fewer people come forward to replace them, some groups are struggling to continue offering the programs residents rely upon.

The Community Volunteer Fair is supported by the Golden and District Community Foundation, WorkBC, the Province of British Columbia and the Golden Women’s Resource Centre.

Admission is free and no registration is required.

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!

It’s not something you often see making its way through town — the trucks normally hard at work in the bush. But when the industry loses one of its own, the community makes the time.

A quiet but powerful display of just how significant the forestry industry is, and the kind of community we have here.
