A bank swallow nesting enhancement project in Invermere is complete thanks to a partnership between Wildsight Golden’s Upper Columbia Swallow Habitat Enhancement Project (UCSHEP) and the District of Invermere (DOI).
On Oct.4, heavy equipment was used to reslope a large pile of substrate that was slated to be removed as part of an upcoming DOI park project.
This pile had the perfect type of nesting substrate, but most of it did not have a vertical face – a feature required for breeding by bank swallows.
The small portion of the pile that did have a vertical face had been used by breeding bank swallows, which was discovered by a UCSHEP volunteer in 2021.
This enhancement site will be fenced off to encourage people to stay at a safe distance from this critical habitat, and interpretive signage has been added.
