For a town where an active lifestyle is part of everyday life, Golden has relatively few dedicated spaces for people looking to exercise outside of a traditional gym setting.
That is something Jenn Tataryn hopes to change with Core Potential, a new boutique fitness studio opening at #115-612 7th Street North (behind the left OSO building).
I stopped by the studioโs open house to get a look at the new space and learn more about what it will offer to Golden residents.
Core Potential is designed around instructor-led classes, with a focus on functional fitness and mindful movement. The studioโs schedule will include everything from spin and strength training to Pilates, barre, mobility and yoga-inspired classes.
Rather than trying to replicate a traditional gym, Tataryn said the goal is to create a space where people can receive more direct instruction while still working out alongside others.
Tataryn has lived in Golden for more than 20 years and brings 30 years of experience in health and fitness coaching to the business. She will oversee the studio as its owner while also serving as its lead instructor.
Her background includes rehabilitative kinesiology as well as Stott Pilates and yoga fitness training, which is reflected in the studioโs mix of strength, mobility and movement-based classes.
โCore Potential was created with a vision: to build a welcoming, community-focused fitness studio in Golden where functional fitness meets mindful movement,โ the studioโs website states.
Walking into the studio for the first time, my initial impression was that the space felt small but bright and functional. Located behind Ethos (on the brewery side), the studio is set up to accommodate group classes while allowing the space to be adapted depending on what is being taught.
The programming is also designed to offer a range of class lengths and intensity levels. Spin classes such as Straight Up Spin and Spin nโ Strength are 45 minutes, making them an option for people looking to fit a workout into a busy day. Strength-focused classes run for an hour, while Yoga Core Fusion is 75 minutes and combines core stability, mobility, slow yoga flow, stretching and relaxation.
For those looking for more focused strength work, Straight Up Strength is a small-group class limited to six participants. The class uses equipment including dumbbells, cables, a Smith machine and barbells, with a focus on circuits, multi-joint movements and more individualized coaching within a group setting.
There will also be options for older adults. The Seniorโs Strength Circuit is designed as a small-group, coached class focused on strength, mobility and balance, while
Strength/Power/Impact was developed with the needs of women over 40 in mind, although the website notes that everyone is welcome.
Other offerings include Muscle Sculpt nโ Power, Athletic Core on the Mat, Pilates Fusion on the Mat, Fit Flow Mobility nโ Stretch, Straight Up Barre and Barre, Pilates Fusion.
The variety is intentional. Core Potential describes its approach as balancing performance with recovery and challenge with restoration, with the aim of helping people build strength while also improving mobility and overall movement.
The new studio could also have an impact beyond its own clientele. Some instructor-led classes that have previously operated out of the Golden Gym will be able to move into Core Potential, potentially freeing up some space for people who use the gym primarily for independent workouts.
For Tataryn, the studio is ultimately about creating another option for people in Golden, whether they are experienced athletes looking for a structured workout or people who are just beginning to incorporate more movement into their lives.
The studioโs schedule and class bookings are available through the Core Potential website, with new clients able to create an account and book classes online – www.corepotential.caGolden BC Canada: exploring a gateway to Canada’s natural wonders 2025
