Since opening the Basecamp Lodge at the corner of Kicking Horse Drive and 9th St N in December 2021, locals have eagerly awaited Basecamp Resorts’ next development phase in Golden. We recently spoke with Sky McLean, CEO of Basecamp Resorts, to discover what’s next for her company in town.

McLean shared, “Basecamp is moving forward to build 40 hotel units where the Basecamp Lodge is located and another series of townhomes intended for long-term rental on the adjacent site”, which is located across the street.

More precisely, the 40 hotel units will be situated to the left of the timber-framed lodge structure, as viewed by facing the property, and will span along Kicking Horse Drive. The views of the Kicking Horse and Columbia River from the site are anticipated to be stunning.

McLean estimates that construction of the 40 units will begin in 2025-26, depending upon pre-sales and market conditions. Construction is expected to take approximately 14-18 months to complete and will create an additional ten hospitality jobs for the local economy.

Basecamp Resorts, headquartered in Canmore, was founded in 2017 with a single property under the Basecamp brand. The company now operates 13 boutique hotel and resort properties in Banff & Lake Louise, Canmore, Golden, Kananaskis, and Revelstoke. Some properties were built from the ground up, while others were acquired and renovated. The properties range from resorts and suites featuring full kitchens, bedrooms, and living areas to more traditional mountain lodges, cabins, and glamping options.

With three more projects underway, including the Golden expansion, Basecamp Resorts is one of the fastest-growing hospitality companies in Western Canada.

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!
