Residents invited to learn about school trustee role ahead of 2026 election

Rocky Mountain School District by Rocky Mountain School District

in Local News

In October 2026, communities across British Columbia will head to the polls to elect local government officials, including School Board Trustees. Trustees are elected representatives who help guide the direction of public education in their local school district and play an important role in supporting student success and well-being.

Rocky Mountain School District has nine (9) Trustees that work together as a Board of Education to provide governance and long-term direction for the district. Their role is focused on the “big picture” of education: setting strategic priorities, approving annual budgets, developing and reviewing policies & practices, and ensuring resources are used responsibly to support students and schools.

A key part of being a Trustee is advocacy and community connection. Trustees listen to students, staff, families, Indigenous partners, and community members to better understand local priorities and perspectives. They help bring those voices to the board table and work collaboratively to make informed decisions that reflect the needs and values of the communities they serve.

Trustees are also strong advocates for public education. They work with provincial organizations, neighbouring districts, and government partners to promote opportunities and supports that benefit students both locally and across British Columbia.

While trustees are not involved in the daily management of individual schools, they help shape the vision, goals, and future direction of education in the district. Their decisions can influence student learning, school culture, facility planning, transportation, accessibility, and long-term educational opportunities for years to come. The time commitment of a Trustee is monthly meetings, committee representations, school events, and some provincial travel.

Serving as a school trustee is a meaningful form of public service and an opportunity to make a positive and lasting impact in the community. For residents interested in education, leadership, and community involvement, the October 2026 election offers an opportunity to step forward and help shape the future of local schools.

An information session will be held in the Learning Commons at Golden Secondary School on Monday, May 25th, from 6-7 pm for anyone who wants to learn more about the role of a School Board Trustee.
