With wildfire season continuing to remind British Columbians how quickly conditions can change, an upcoming community presentation in Golden will offer practical advice on protecting property, staying informed and preparing for emergencies.
Wildfire Safety Night takes place Thursday, Aug. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Golden Seniors Centre.
The free event is open to all ages and will include hands-on guidance, refreshments and information designed to help residents feel better prepared before an emergency strikes.
For people living in Golden and the surrounding rural area, wildfire preparedness is about more than what happens when flames appear on the horizon.
Smoke, road closures, evacuation alerts and power outages can all affect daily life, sometimes with little warning.
The presentation will focus on three areas: FireSmart landscaping, the Alertable emergency notification app and the BC Services Card app.
FireSmart landscaping principles can help residents reduce wildfire risks around their homes by paying closer attention to vegetation, yard maintenance and other potential hazards on their properties. Even relatively simple changes can make a property more resilient and contribute to a safer neighbourhood.
Participants will also learn how to use Alertable, an app that provides emergency notifications and helps residents stay informed as situations develop.
Having reliable information readily available can be especially valuable when conditions change quickly or when residents need to make decisions about their safety.
The evening will also include instruction on the BC Services Card app, which allows users to access government services securely from their phones. For residents who are unfamiliar with these digital tools, hands-on assistance will be available.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a fully charged cellphone and any passwords or login information they may need to set up or access the apps.
Passwords should be entered privately and should not be shared with anyone.
Although the event is being held at the Golden Seniors Centre, it is intended for the entire community. Residents of all ages are welcome, and no registration is required.
Snacks and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. Space is limited, so those interested may want to arrive early.
Residents are advised to bring two pieces of indentification, and consider joining the BC Service Card app. Building an emergency support profile can streamline the evacuation process for people as everything will be in place if and when it is needed.
Wildfire preparedness can feel overwhelming, but knowing where to find reliable information, understanding how to reduce risks at home and becoming comfortable with emergency tools are practical steps that can make a meaningful difference.
