Big finish for GKHAT as local athlete wins at provincials

As the end of GKHAT’s season is quickly approaching, it is ending with a bang.

With their year-end celebration, a Skitacular and Banquet, they also had another reason to celebrate. For the first time ever, a GKHAT athlete has won provincials.

Sebastian Baker, a U14 athlete, competed this weekend in APEX against 120 boys from around the province. His grit and tenacity shone through on Saturday, where he claimed a 7th place in the slalom.

Yet, Baker was hungry for more. He finished his first run in the GS on Sunday with a commanding one-second lead. With all the pressure on his shoulders, he executed his second run to finish on top of the podium. GKHAT, his coaches, family, teammates and friends are beyond proud of his drive and focus.

Meanwhile, in Golden, GKHAT completed its final weekend of U6 & U8 programming, with their banquet and celebration at the Rec Plex. Big congratulations to our most improved recipients:

• U6 – Nico & Freya

• U8- Ryder & Abby

• U10- London & Nathan

• U12 – Kayden & Evan

• U14 – Jackson & Lillian

• Peter Bowle-Evans Memorial award (for their passion for skiing and dedication to the sport) – Harper

On Sunday, the athletes raced around the ski hill in a Scavenger Hunt, along with a dual slalom and a speed trap. Some of our athletes are reaching top speeds of 67 km/h.

The club would like to thank the GKHAT Board for all their time, dedication, and hard work for a successful season. In addition, thanks to our Head Coach, Ryan Ford, for creating such a love and culture for skiing and racing.

This year, GKHAT would also like to honour Sarah Recoskie, the Nancy Greene Head Coach, who is officially retiring after more than 10 years with GKHAT. We thank her for her tremendous impacts on our athletes, teaching a love of skiing, but also stewardship, kindness, and integrity.

Finally, many people help to create a successful season. GKHAT is thankful to their whole coaching team, all their 140 athletes and parents! As the club heads to their final races, the Kootenay Zone Finals in Whitewater, and the Doug Meyers Invitational in Lake Louise, we wish them luck!

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!
