The Golden Girls women’s hockey team travelled to Vernon to participate in the Verncaygeon Adult Hockey Tournament. The ladies were undefeated through the three round robin games and advanced to Sunday’s final against an experienced team from Calgary. In the final, the team put together a great overall effort and came out on top by a final score of 4 – 1. The defence was backstopped by strong goaltending from the tandem of Leaetta Stout and Stephanie Findlater, who split duties throughout the tournament. Leading scorers through the four games were Marcie Trenholm and Stacey Nikita.
First-time tournament attendees, Christy Trafananko and Arranny Khuong, put together a dynamic performance with multiple goals and great defensive play. Team chemistry was on full display as the ladies displayed precision passing, and they were rewarded with the unforgettable experience of hoisting a trophy in triumph.
The Golden Girls season runs all winter while the Golden and District Arena is open. They have a weekly drop-in ice time that is organized by the Town of Golden, where players participate in skills and drills, then a scrimmage.
The team hosts an annual tournament in the fall and typically attends one or two away tournaments per year. The ladies will have the summer off, but will be eager to get back on the ice in September.
