The Golden Rockets are welcoming some fresh leadership behind the bench this season — including Assistant Coach Luke Hall, who joins the team from Stony Plain, Alberta. Hall is no stranger to Golden, or to the Rockets, where his younger brother, Levi, suited up for two and a half seasons.
Hall brings a lifetime of hockey experience and a passion for the game. We caught up with him to learn more about his background and what he’s most excited about in his first season with the Rockets.
Can you tell us a bit about your hockey background and how you got into coaching?
I recently just finished playing for 4 years at Portage College of the ACAC. My first introduction to coaching was working as a goalie coach for Eli Wilson (Former NHL Goalie coach) and Ian Gordon of the Red Deer Rebels. It was my head coach at Portage, Kevin McClelland, was the one who really piqued my interest in coaching and made me consider it after I was done with my playing career, because of his passion for the game and ability to help his players grow not only as hockey players, but as people.
What excited you about the opportunity to join the Golden Rockets organization?
The opportunity to coach at this level was very exciting, along with Jed’s passion and commitment to do something special here, and getting to live in the great community of Golden.
What do you think are the most important qualities young athletes need to succeed at this level?
I think they need to have a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, but I think the most important thing is that they are able to stay level-headed throughout the season, despite the extreme highs and lows that come with playing.
What goals do you have for the team, both on and off the ice?
On the ice, I think the ultimate goal is always a championship, but off the ice, our goal is to be good role models in the community and people that the younger generation of Golden can look up to.
Are there specific areas you’re excited to focus on with the players this season?
I’m really excited to help push guys to the next level, and I’m excited to try and help them grow as a person and not just a player.
What’s your favourite hockey memory so far (as a player or coach)?
I can’t pinpoint one specific memory, but I made so many great friends and connected with some awesome people along the way, resulting in so many good memories because of hockey.
Do you have a favourite NHL team or player that inspires your coaching?
The St. Louis Blues, I love the way Jim Montgomery has them playing.
Outside of hockey, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love golfing and watching the NFL.
Hall’s enthusiasm and fresh perspective make him a great addition to the Rockets’ bench. Fans can look forward to seeing his energy and dedication in action as the season unfolds — both on and off the ice.
