See + Swim event aims to create a safe space for swimmers

Have you wanted to start going to the pool but felt intimidated by the rules of lane swimming or unsure about jumping into the unknown? Coming up, there is an event designed to help curb those fears and open up the pool community. The Golden Swimming Pool and the Mermaids invite you to their See + Swim event, a free pool orientation and introduction to lane swimming on Monday, August 17.

Swimming can be a great form of exercise and release. People recovering from injuries or looking for low-impact exercise are often encouraged to try swimming. The buoyancy of the water and the slow, controlled movements make it a great option for people of all fitness levels and abilities. Swimming can also provide a valuable mental break from stress and other challenges.

The problem with swimming, especially in a town with limited pool facilities, is that organized lane swims can feel intimidating. With posted signs and rules, along with plenty of experienced swimmers already in the pool, it can sometimes feel like there is not much room for newcomers. This event is meant to squash that feeling and make the pool a more comfortable and welcoming place for everyone.

During the event, participants will receive a pool orientation where they can learn about the different programming offered at the pool and what is available to them. There will also be an introduction to lane swimming, where visitors can learn the rules and etiquette before jumping in for the first time.

The event will also give more experienced swimmers an opportunity to find community or connect with others who may be interested in joining the swim club. The Mermaids, who are co-hosting the event, are โ€œan unofficial team, brought together by a love of swimming and community,โ€ according to member Jena LaRoy. The unofficial team is open to welcoming new members who share a passion for swimming or simply want a way to get involved with the community.

The event is made possible through a Golden & District Community Foundation Neighbourhood Small Grant. The program provides small grants for events and projects that help bring the community together. Because of this support, the See + Swim event is free to attend.

There are two time slots available, one from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and another from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Organizers are asking those planning to attend to register beforehand so they can get a better idea of expected numbers.

To register, visit the Golden Community Facebook page and search for the See + Swim event. There, you can find the event poster and online sign-up form.
