Smile Cookie Week returns to support local charities

One of the most recognizable fundraising campaigns in Canada is back this week, as Tim Hortons launches its annual Smile Cookie campaign.

Running April 27 to May 3, the week-long initiative sees 100 per cent of proceeds from every Smile Cookie sold donated to local charities and community groups selected by individual restaurant owners.

Smile Cookies are the chain’s classic chocolate chunk cookies, hand-decorated with pink and blue icing to form a smiling face.

The campaign, now marking its 30th year, has grown into a major national fundraiser. Since launching in 1996, it has raised more than $150 million across Canada and the United States, including a record $22.6 million in 2025 alone.

Each community benefits directly from local sales, with funds staying close to home to support initiatives ranging from hospitals and food banks to youth programs and school supports.

While it may seem like a small purchase, Smile Cookie Week has become a powerful example of grassroots fundraising, turning a simple treat into meaningful support for community organizations.

Take a look back at these archival pages from the Golden Star and Golden News about the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge.

Built in 2001 by volunteer timber framers and locals, this iconic bridge is Canada’s longest freestanding timber-frame structure and a true symbol of community connection.

Now, 25 years later, it’s time to celebrate!

Join us at Spirit Square tomorrow evening (Saturday, Sept 26) to celebrate the 25th anniversary. See you there, Golden!

It’s not something you often see making its way through town — the trucks normally hard at work in the bush. But when the industry loses one of its own, the community makes the time.

A quiet but powerful display of just how significant the forestry industry is, and the kind of community we have here.
