Golden's Four Points Bookstore: Book review - The Heiress

The Heiress By Rachel Hawkins

This excellent book is from 2023, but it ended up getting reprinted so it wasn’t available to tell you about after I read it.

There has been a bit of a theme with many of the Suspenseful Thrillers or Mystery books I’ve been reviewing; I call them “Literary Thrillers” and “Literary Mysteries”. It’s not a thing, but it seems to really be a thing. I love a good ole whodunnit with a dodgy plot, an old crusty detective or PI and a nefarious victim who obviously deserved it.

I love the cozy mysteries that take place in sprawling manor houses in England or gorgeous wine estates in Italy with a DCI going through a divorce and trying to just focus on work. And of course, the glamorous mysteries that take place in a decadent resort or a remote private island and the rich fancies flit around with their knickers in a twist about the mysterious murder.

Lately however, I have been loving these incredible novels that have mysteries and thrillers within them. I mean really, really good books friends! The Heiress is among them with a solid plot, suspense and intrigue, several old mysteries intertwined with new ones and family feuds that go way back.

In The Heiress, we meet the McTavish of Ashby House in North Carolina. One son has refused his inheritance and gone off to live the normal life he craves, leaving the remaining siblings behind to fight about the estate and ward off questions when the matriarch of their controversial family dies.

As the changing of the family guard tends to, the absent son and his wife gets pulled back into the fray and long buried secrets begin to see the light. And it turns out that everyone has secrets.

I found the book to be full of surprises and I loved the format Hawkins uses to tell the stories of the different characters. If you’re looking for a good book with some twists, this one will be waiting for you!
