Golden Light Horse Club: On a crisp winter day, January 8, 1967, a group of passionate horse enthusiasts gathered, united by their shared love for these magnificent creatures. This momentous occasion marked the birth of the first official riding club in the area, aptly named the Whiskey Trail Riders.
From its humble beginnings, the club has evolved, adapting to the changing times while maintaining its core values of community, horsemanship, and volunteerism. In January 1975, the Horse Club was granted permission by the Town of Golden to build an arena above the Little League baseball grounds. Through the tireless efforts of volunteers, this arena remains a vital part of recreation in Golden and Area A. Today, the club proudly bears the name Golden Light Horse Club, officially established as a Non-Profit Society on May 16, 2000.
For nearly 30 years, the Golden Light Horse Club hosted an annual rodeo, a cornerstone event for the community. This tradition was spearheaded for many years by Delbert Johnson, a man whose dedication to the club and the sport left an indelible mark.
Delbert was born in Inveremere but grew up on the family farm in Edgewater with his parents, Emil and Margaret, and his sister Anne. In 1958, he married Lil Malberg. Delbert’s passion for horses and rodeo led him to become a driving force behind the Golden Rodeo, touching countless lives through his involvement with the Golden Light Horse Club.
Since his passing, the club has honoured his legacy with the Delbert Johnson Memorial Jackpot Barrel Race, now in its 12th year. This year’s event will take place on May 24 & 25, welcoming riders from across the province. Spectators can enjoy thrilling barrel races, grab a burger at the concession, and celebrate the beginning of summer in true rodeo spirit.
The Golden Light Horse Club has thrived for decades thanks to the dedication of families and volunteers. Whether working in the canteen, planning events, maintaining the grounds, fixing fences, timekeeping, or corralling, these individuals have ensured the club’s continued success. While interest has fluctuated over the years, today the club is bustling with activity, with events happening weekly at the Rodeo Grounds.
The Golden Light Horse Club is more than just an organization—it is a testament to the enduring love for horses and the unwavering commitment of a community that has kept it alive for generations.
