Emerald Lake Lodge introduces new winter sky dome dining experience

Visitors have long been drawn to Emerald Lake Lodge for its setting alone. Tucked away inside Yoho National Park, the historic lodge has always delivered big scenery and classic mountain hospitality. This winter, it is adding something new to the mix with the launch of the Emerald Sky Dome, a limited-access, private dining experience designed to bring a little culinary theatre to the colder months.

The Sky Dome is a heated, transparent dining structure set up on the Kicking Horse Patio, offering guests a three-hour, six-course tasting menu served in an intimate setting for up to six people. The dome is fully enclosed, softly lit, and designed to keep diners warm while still immersed in the winter landscape.

A strong food foundation

The new experience builds on an already established food program at Emerald Lake Lodge. The Mount Burgess Dining Room remains the lodge’s main restaurant, known for seasonal menus that lean into Rocky Mountain ingredients and comfort-driven cuisine. Game meats, seafood, and vegetarian options are all regular features, appealing to both overnight guests and day visitors looking for a sit-down dining experience.

The Kicking Horse Lounge offers a more relaxed option, serving local beer, cocktails, and approachable favourites such as burgers, charcuterie, and share plates. Just steps away, Cilantro on the Lake continues to serve hikers with quick meals, coffee, and grab-and-go options near the bridge (generally open seasonally in the summer).

What makes the Sky Dome different

The Emerald Sky Dome, a winter seasonal feature, is positioned as a premium, reservation-only experience. Guests begin the evening with a welcome drink in the Kicking Horse Lounge before being escorted to the dome.

Once inside, guests are served a six-course blind tasting menu. That means no printed menu with descriptions, only plates arriving one by one. Based on what has been shared by the lodge, courses may include:

• A rich winter consommé or house-made soup

• A seafood course featuring local lake or ocean fish

• A game dish such as slow-cooked elk or bison

• A vegetable-forward course designed for balance and texture

• A palate cleanser with seasonal fruit or sorbet

• A rich dessert paired with a sweet wine or digestif

Pairings are optional but available with each course — everything from carefully chosen wines to a classic aperitif or a non-alcoholic beverage flight chosen to complement the flavours.

As for cost, the lodge lists the experience at about $185 per person, with tax and gratuity on top. Pairings are extra and generally priced per person, meaning a fully paired dinner will run higher. For comparison, a standard dinner in the Mount Burgess Dining Room will be noticeably less expensive, so the Sky Dome is squarely aimed at special occasions rather than casual meals.

Why this matters locally

For the Golden area, this kind of offering helps reinforce Emerald Lake Lodge’s role as a year-round tourism anchor. Winter dining experiences encourage longer stays, repeat visits, and shoulder-season travel, all of which ripple outward to nearby communities through employment, supplier relationships, and regional spending.

It also reflects a broader shift in Rockies tourism, where visitors are increasingly looking for curated experiences rather than simply a place to sleep. By investing in food and atmosphere, Emerald Lake Lodge is signalling that it intends to stay competitive in a crowded mountain hospitality market.

For locals, the Sky Dome may not be an everyday outing, but it adds another layer to what Emerald Lake offers and strengthens the region’s reputation as a destination that pairs natural beauty with thoughtful, well-executed experiences.

It’s not something you often see making its way through town — the trucks normally hard at work in the bush. But when the industry loses one of its own, the community makes the time.

A quiet but powerful display of just how significant the forestry industry is, and the kind of community we have here.
