Meet the Golden Rockets’ Assistant Coach: Jan Trummer

Rounding out the Golden Rockets Junior Hockey coaching staff this season is newcomer Jan Trummer, who joins the organization from the Czech Republic.

Trummer brings a lifetime of hockey experience to Golden, including time spent playing professionally in leagues in both Russia and the Czech Republic. Now stepping into an assistant coaching role with the Rockets, he’s excited to share his knowledge and help develop the next generation of players.

We caught up with Trummer to learn more about his hockey background, coaching journey, and what he’s looking forward to in his first season with the Rockets.

Can you tell us a bit about your hockey background and how you got into coaching?

I’ve been involved in hockey since I was four years old. I came up through the youth system in České Budějovice, played in the Russian MHL, and later had the opportunity to play in the second-highest Czech league with my hometown club, Motor České Budějovice. That season, we made it to the relegation/promotion round for the Extraliga.

After that year, I wasn’t offered a new contract, so I had a decision to make — whether to fight for a spot with another second-league team or go abroad. In the end, I chose to play in the lowest Czech league, which we managed to win and earn promotion from. Around that same time, I started coaching kids at the Jaroslav Pouzar Club HC Lvi České Budějovice. Since my dad is also a coach, the transition into coaching felt very natural.

What excited you about the opportunity to join the Golden Rockets organization?

For Czech players, Canada is the homeland of hockey. When I first spoke with Jed, the Rockets’ head coach and general manager, I immediately felt his passion and love for the game. From that first conversation, I hoped we could find a way to work together.

When I arrived in Golden, I could see that there is a real commitment to building something here. A lot of organizations talk about growth, but the reality doesn’t always match the words. Here, it does. You can see the effort being put in to move the Rockets forward, and I hope I can contribute to that process.

What do you think are the most important qualities young athletes need to succeed at this level?

Hard work is essential, but it also needs to be paired with a desire to learn and improve, along with clear goals and a plan to reach them. Sometimes you see players who work extremely hard but don’t have a plan, which can lead to frustration.

On the other hand, even hard work and a good plan don’t always guarantee success — but they will never make you a worse person. That growth, both on and off the ice, is important.

How do you see your role as assistant coach complementing the rest of the coaching staff?

On a personal level, we all get along extremely well, which is a huge positive. As coaches, we complement each other too. We don’t always have the same opinions, but those differences are constructive and help push us forward. I think that kind of environment is very important in coaching.

What goals do you have for the team, both on and off the ice?

Of course, as a competitor, I’d love to win the league. But first and foremost, our focus should be on making the playoffs. Beyond results, my goal is to help the players achieve their individual goals as much as possible and support their development — not just as hockey players, but as people.

What’s your favourite hockey memory so far?

It’s hard to pick just one, but my season with Motor České Budějovice stands out. We had an incredible group and made it to the promotion round, which was a special experience. Another highlight would be my third season playing under coach David Servis — that was probably when I enjoyed hockey the most.

Do you have a favourite NHL team or player that inspires your coaching?

I’ve always kind of supported Boston, and then Ray Bourque moved to Colorado and won the Stanley Cup, so I’d probably say those two teams. Plus, both teams also have Czech players who are performing really well.

Outside of hockey, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?

I enjoy playing golf and tennis. Recently, I’ve also been trying to focus more on self-development. Being in such a beautiful environment here in Golden definitely helps — now we’ll see how well I can stick with it.

As Trummer settles into his first season with the Golden Rockets, his international experience, thoughtful approach to player development, and passion for the game add another strong layer to the coaching staff. Fans can look forward to seeing his influence both on the ice and behind the bench as the Rockets continue to build toward a competitive season ahead.
