Bacchus Cafe: Where books and bespoke bites meet the Kicking Horse

Bacchus Cafe in Golden, BC.

Bacchus Cafe in Golden, BC.

Perched above the Four Points Books shop at 409 Ninth Ave N, Bacchus Café offers a cozy, inviting atmosphere accented with shelves of new and used books. Patrons can sip Banff Roasting Company coffee and organic teas while browsing—or set up with a laptop at a quiet table or the sunny seasonal patio overlooking the Kicking Horse River.

If you’re either a book lover or a coffee lover, you likely already know of the cafe, and it’s probably on your list of places to frequent. Just in case it isn’t, read on.

Bacchus is named for the original owner, Caleb Moss, as in Bacchus Books & Café. Moss had purchased a used bookstore from Kevin Finnegan and evolved into Bacchus.

The café was run as a separate entity and subsequently sold to a café employee, Tammy Castonguay, in later years. During COVID, however, Tammy discovered other passions, and the café was available for a new direction.

The café is now owned and operated by Katie Mitzel, acclaimed backcountry chef and cookbook author of The Skoki Cookbook and Rocky Mountain Cooking. After a long tenure cooking at Skoki Lodge in Lake Louise, Mitzel transitioned to Bacchus, bringing her mountain-meets-gourmet sensibility to downtown Golden.

The café menu reflects Mitzel’s backcountry roots, with wholesome, chef-crafted fare – Buddha bowls, house‑made soups, sandwiches, and baked goods.

Expect fresh, seasonal, hearty dishes that balance comfort with sophistication—just like in the backcountry kitchens where Mitzel honed her craft.

Bacchus is more than just a café; it’s a gathering space, a creative hub where locals and visitors linger over books, sip espresso, meet friends, and soak up the views.

It’s frequently mentioned among Golden, BC’s top cafés, and a favourite of many a local and traveller. And it’s staffed by an awesome crew of baristas.

Why it’s worth visiting:

• Blend of interests: perfect for book lovers, remote workers, families, hikers, and passers‑by.

• Gourmet yet approachable menu: breakfast bowls, waffles, soups, sandwiches, and treats baked fresh in-house daily.

• Scenic comfort: intimate indoor spaces and a riverside patio.

• Local leadership: run by a chef known for quality, creativity and mountain hospitality.

Whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or simply an afternoon treat you’re after, Bacchus Café will hit the spot.

Who will love it:

• Bookworms: bookshelves line the upper level, great for browsing.

• Food enthusiasts: crafted dishes from a celebrated chef.

• Outdoor lovers: convenient stop before or after exploring trails, river walks, or Kicking Horse Resort.

Bacchus Cafe isn’t just another coffee spot; it’s the kind of place where story and sustenance meet. With Katie Mitzel’s culinary pedigree behind the menu and a thoughtful fusion of café and bookstore, it’s a Golden, BC staple. Whether you’re fuelling up for a hike or settling in for a satisfying breakfast, this is where heart and taste unite.
